Reaching the World with MOOCs
Current climate conditions are impacting global health. Climate Change is in the news daily worldwide reflecting its impact for humans and the environment: Extreme weather events such as heat waves and hurricanes, for example, affect human health and also change the ecology of infectious diseases. There is a huge demand for a broader research approach to address these challenges with regards to society, demography and economy.
Three MOOCs have been developed in cooperation with international partners, that were offered on the online learning platform iversity and Fun MOOC. The MOOC Climate Change & Health was designed for a broader audience, the MOOC for Climate Change & Health for policy-makers was targeted at policy-makers, and the MOOC Changement Climatique et Santé en Contexte Africain was created for a francophone audience with longstanding partners from the Centre de Rechereche Santé de Nouna (CRSN) in Burkina Faso.
For Climate Change education, MOOCs offer possibilities to engage a broad audience in the changing development of policies and practices, as well as they support the development towards a sustainable development and Climate literacy. Results show that MOOCs even reach participants from low-resource environments, which make MOOCs a valuable tool for Climate Change and Health education.
